In the political atmosphere surrounding us, it is difficult to open your computer without seeing something triggering...on either side of the political spectrum. For those of us who are content creators, social media managers, and social media marketers (or all three!), it can become insufferable. This is especially true when you have to sift through your newsfeed to find relevant content for your page.

The constant stream of political posts and ads can become overwhelming and mentally frustrating. So how do you combat this never-ending battle to keep a clear mind? Here are a few suggestions to help you better focus on your own content and manage your page without upsetting your mental health.

Control Your Social Media Experience

  • Curate Your Feed – Unfollow or mute accounts that frequently post political content to reduce exposure.

  • Use "See Less" or "Not Interested" Features – Many platforms allow you to train the algorithm to show you less political content.

  • Follow Niche-Relevant Accounts – Surround yourself with content that inspires you and is relevant to your niche.

2. Set Boundaries & Limit Exposure

  • Use a Content Scheduler – Automate posts to reduce real-time interactions with political debates.

  • Create a Personal & Professional Divide – Have separate accounts for work and personal use to control exposure to political content.

3. Avoid Engagement with Political Discourse

  • Don’t Engage in Political Comments – Even if you feel tempted to respond, avoid debates that drain your energy.

  • Disable Comments on Certain Posts – If necessary, limit engagement on your content to maintain a positive space.

  • Ignore Provocative Topics – Recognize when a post is designed to trigger reactions and move past it.

4. Prioritize Mental Well-Being

  • Take Regular Social Media Detoxes – Step away from social media when you feel overwhelmed.

  • Engage in Offline Activities – Reading, exercise, and hobbies help maintain mental balance.

  • Practice Mindfulness & Stress Management – Take a break to step away from the computer and use deep breathing techniques or meditation.

As someone working in healthcare, I recognize that avoiding political topics isn't always possible. However, by taking a few steps to refocus your mind, you can more effectively handle these types of posts. Remember, protecting your mental well-being allows you to stay focused on what truly matters—providing quality content and maintaining a healthy balance in both your personal and professional life.

Feeling overwhelmed by online content, you can pause to calm your mind and refocus when confronted with triggering posts.
